How do I know what country would be more beneficial to my interests for study abroad?

All right since the last time I asked a question similar to this I was attacked by not being 'specific' even though I wanted to go to that state in the United Kingdon. All right here it goes AGAIN... I am trying to choose between two locations for study abroad. I am interested in New Zealand and the UK, specifically Oxford (which is in South East England.)

In addition to this I'm attracted to the Oxford due to the fact that it would look extremely good on my resume although I think I would not get the benefits of seeing the lands of New Zealand, which has plenty of greenery in my opinion.

So which would work better?

  1. The great thing about living in Europe is that you can travel Europe. I've visited 10 countries since I first moved here from America....brilliant. However, If I had to make your decision now I would probably choose New Zealand for a new experience. Either way you'll be able to experience a world outside of your own so it doesn't really matter where you end up going.

  2. Oxford, Cambridge, or St. Andrews (in Scotland) are all at the top table as far as your C.V. for international recognition and employment are concerned. New Zealand sounds nice for post-graduate courses but does not have the international recognition that you may require.

  3. Well i live in the UK so at the risk of sounding bias i say go to Oxford. But first of all, if you are plannign to study at Oxford it is pretty exclusive so are you sure you can get in?

And also it is much more close to "civilisation" In the sense that you will have close access to the rest of Europe. Hope this helps.

  4. NZ is nice, go there for a holiday!  You need to work out your subject specialization and then decide.  You may find a N.Z. university, or if it is postgraduate research (nz professors) are highly regarded in that specialty.  As a general rule Oxford is better, but it is highly competitive, you would need to obtain a place first.  NZ has some well-regarded universities (like auckland, who's former vice-chancellor was pinched by oxford to overturn their poor financial situation).  Studying under a renowned professor (especially with references) in your specialty looks better in the academic profession than just the university institution (having said that, there are a lot of renowned researchers at Oxford).  If you are an undergraduate, then you could consider doing your degree in one place and doing a student exchange at the other.

  5. before choosing a destination to studying abroad at, I first decided which colleges best suited my major. many of the countries i was interested in did not offer the required classes i needed to graduate on time. so it was easy to cancel them out. i then weighed out my objectives for going abroad i.e partying, history, girls, prestige and reputation of school, etc. i also looked at what program provided the best scholarships and grants. i finally made a decision based on the college that best suited my needs at the time.
