Drive c:/ in my computer is running seriously low on space and I was wondering what files I could delete...

For example..

Can I delete fonts that I never use?

Can I delete anything folders that aren't as bright as the others..(like a hidden folder that is unhidden - I believe that's what they are)? e.g. sqmdata01.sqm which is immediately in the c: file.

What other files you I delete to increase my memory?

  1. never touch anything in that category or else your machine will not boot.

remove programs from control panel, add/remove programs,

    after removing programs from there,

open C: program files you can delete a program there you don't need and you know of.

perform disk clean, right click on local disk and click properties, click on disk clean up,

after it loads up, mark files you want to delete. and click ok.

    then after this process.

run check disk by clicking on start menu, run, type cmd, type chkdsk

this will fix errors on your machine when you restart.

Do not delete anything in C: apart from some folders in program files.

The fonts you want to delete normally are executed on some sites that require it, if not you will not read font writings on some sites that need it or use it.

  2. Uninstall any programs you don't need...go to 'add or remove programs' then go into Program Files on the 'c' drive and delete the file.

You can use CCleaner to remove temp files and cookies plus it has a utility for uninstalling programs.

Then I would do a defragment and/or check disk to place the remaining files back in good order..this should also free up space.

Note: make sure you are turning OFF the computer while not in use for a long period of time...leaving it on eats up system resources (memory).  Allow the pc to cool down to room temperature...then do a 'cold' boot.  You should regain even more memory.

  3. If you have Windows XP or Vista, then I'd recommend 2Gig of RAM.  (it's really cheap these days)

Deleting fonts isn't much of a help (although you are right, you can delete them, as long as  you are SURE that no program requires them)

    Try this

    1.  Are there any old applications that you can uninstall?   (go to Control Panel / Add Remove programs and uninstall them)

    2.  Go to: Start/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.  Check every choice EXCEPT (compress files).  That has been VERY helpful to me.

    3.  Go to: Start/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter (this will help resort the files that you have so they can be accessed quicker)

    4.  Do you have any old files that you can 'archive' off of the hard drive onto a CD?

That's some of the basics you can use - there's ore advanced stuff... but for a general disk clean up, that'll help you.

feel free to contact me if you need more help.

    good luck

  4. Hi,

please do this download and run CCleaner this will safely delete all your temp files etc for you then reboot back into safe mode again (press F8 as it boots up) and defrag your hard drive to get all your free space back again, you need 10% free space on your HD to defrag correctly. this will help you (and get me 10 points as well i hope).

  5. type this on address, such make sure to replace your user name

    C:\Documents and Settings\(username) \Local Settings\Temp

    Delete all, not actually needed.
