How do I know what type of cable wire is in my house or what type does IO(Cablevision) cable TV use?

I want to purchase a cable stripper and crimper but the ones that I find are for either, or a combo of, RG6, RG56, RG58, RG59 cable. What type do I have if I have IO(Cablevision) cable TV? I don't want to buy the wrong tools to split a few cable lines in my house.

Thanks, CL.

  1. As long as you are not trying to strip or crimp the cable companies own cable, you should be OK.  Just get the right tool for the cable that you are buying to run inside the house.  Cable is marked in small print with what type it is.  If you go to a home store or radio shack, they will help you pick out the right cable and tools for the job.

For inside the house, standard RG-6 should be fine.

  2. You should have rg6. You can measure the outside diameter which should be 7mm. If it's 6mm then it's rg59. Cable companies use rg6 quad shield becuase it's better for HD transmission than the thinner rg59
