  1. In my experience, and yes I have had a horse lay down to roll with me on it, they will put their head down and seem to be sniffing around. Then they will paw at the earth. Basically its the same signs that the horses give when you are not riding them.

A horse will generally not roll with a rider on them. In my experience the spot has to be a really good rolling one for them to think about it. A good sandy spot will some times draw their attention. But in general they will wait for you to get off them to roll. In my experience it is also more common for a horse to roll with a rider on them in a strange place, I know several that have done it on beach rides.

Frankly its just not as comfortable when they are wearing the saddle to lay down and roll around. The point of rolling is to scratch the back where they cannot reach normally with their mouth or feet.

  2. they'll usually lower their head and start sniffing the ground.  they'll walk in circles until they find the "perfect" spot:)

  3. I have never seen a horse roll with a person on board but usually when they roll they paw at the ground a bit. Although some horses paw at the ground anyway...

  4. When they pee, they stretch-out.  It does feel like they are getting low from the saddle, but the head stays up.  They also often lift the tail.

When they roll, the might paw the ground, the head goes down, the back humps up a little as he gathers his legs underneath him, they go down front-first.
