This is the first time I am growing corn in our garden. How do I know when to pick it? What are the signs? Thanks!

  1. Not only do the tassels turn brown and dry out, but  also almost all of the kernels have fully developed and you can easily break through one of the kernels with your finger nail. You'll have to pull back a bit of the husk to expose the tip of an ear of corn to determine this.

A ripe ear of corn should have definitely well-formed kernels all the way out to at most an inch from the tip of the ear. If so, pull back the husk a little more and push your finger nail into one of the kernels near the middle of the ear. If your nail goes through the kernel's skin easily, it's ripe. If the skin is tough, it's overripe and best suited for animal feed.

  2. It's ripe when the tassels turn brown and dry out.
