How do I know when pears are ripe to pick from the tree?

Question

I have 4 pear trees loaded with pears. They are so loaded, many of the large branches have broken off. I have picked the ones from the broken branches, but they are still green. I am afraid if I don''t pick them soon the trees will die from broken branches. Personally, I don't like pears, but I would like to give them to friends. I have some apple trees that I am afraid are going to suffer the same fate, from being so loaded with fruit.

You may need to shake the trees to lighten the load.

Usually if you pick the fruit and it comes away easily from the branch then it is ready to go.
