  1. Check out the rating that the school has.  Even if you don't have kids, a crappy school will usually be in a crappier area.  Check out rottenneighbor.com to see how many complaints are in a given neighborhood.  Check out crime statistics, and then check out whatever's important to you.  Bigger cities have more nightlife, but also more crime.  Also, go to employment websites like careerbuilder.com and check out how many places are hiring and what types of jobs are available to see if you can get a job there (if you need one).  Also, go to craigslist.com and read rants and raves.  Just to get a feel if you're moving in to a conservative or liberal community.  Just don't take what you read there too seriously.  Generally the stupidest 5% of the population post there.  It's just to get a feel for the area.  Like in Northern Nevada, there are tons of posts about how Mexicans and blacks should be killed and hung and all this stuff, and if I would have seen that I would have been prepared for the racism and dirty looks I get out here.

  2. What do you want to do? What kind of work are you looking for? What amenities do you like in a city?
