Question:

How do I know which auto estimate to go with?

The 1st estimate I got was $1200, so I decided to go to another place and they told me $450. Because of the huge discrepancy in price, I went to two other places and theirs were $1300 and $1000. Why would their be such a difference? Is it stupid to take the cheapest one?

  1. You have to go through the coverage with a fine toothed comb and understand what you are getting for your money.

To just accept the lowest one would not be good.  They could take your money, then you get into an accident and find out you aren't even covered. Over time you would have given them thousands of dollars for bad coverage you can't use anyway.

    Beware Volcano insurance salesmen.

  2. I would stay away from that really low estimate ($450.00) because those are the ones that wind up being a ton more and the mechanic will tell you later, "Well, it was just an estimate."

  3. I think it would be a bad idea...  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...  I would go with the one for $1,000 - it's the average for all 4.  Check the BBB for their status and make sure you are dealing with a reputable company.  Also, show the other shops the lower estimate and see if they can try and match it (or at least come close to it...)  Good luck!
