1. You could either convert both to decimals or convert the fractions to the same denominator. I'll do the second one listed.

    1)

    10/3 ?= 17/4

    2) Multiply top and bottom of the left fraction by 4, multiply the top and bottom of the right fraction by 3.

    40/12 ?= 51/12

    3) 51>12 therefore,

    17/4 > 10/3

  2. Multiply the numerator of 10/3 by the denominator of 17/4 and you get 10 x 4 = 40.

Multiply the numerator of 17/4 by the denominator of 10/3 and you get 17 x 3 = 51.

    Since 51 is > 40, 17/4 > 10/3.

  3. Multiply the two lower numbers together.

So 3 x 4 is 12. That becomes the common denominator.

Now multiply each top number by 12 divided by the original number.

    So it becomes 40 / 12 and 51 / 12

Therefore the second number is bigger.

  4. 10 divided by 3 = 3 1/3

    17 divided by 4 = 4 1/4

    10/3 is less than 17/4

  5. Common denominator = 12

    Multiply 10/3 by 4 to get 40/12

    and 17/4 by 3 to get 51/12

    40/12 < 51/12

  6. you can either find the common denominator,

or what i prefer to do is find the percents.

so divide 10 by 3 and 17 by 4 and what ever one is greater put the greater than sign.
