How do I leach an internet connection off of my laptop to my PC via ethernet?

I have a problem. Our house has a router but the room its in is too far away and I don't have an Ethernet cord that will reach. I also don't have built-in wireless for my PC or a wireless USB key for that matter. My only possible option is to somehow leach the internet from one of our laptops in the house that has built-in wifi. Is this possible? I've heard that it is but I was thinking maybe I could get some how-to links cause I suck at research/googling in general. Which is why anybody comes to this site.

  1. I suppose that your laptop is connected and getting Internet from the router via WiFi. First and foremost, get an Ethernet cord to connect your PC to the laptop. If the laptop has XP on it, go to >Network Connections, right click on the connection with Internet and go to Properties. In the Properties box, click Advanced & you will see Internet Connection Sharing. Just tick in the small box to allow  Internet Connection Sharing. Close the dialog boxes by clicking OKs.

Yeah, and be care to see that the WiFi is legal.

On your PC, go to >Network Connections, right click on the Network Connection and then go to Properties. Double click on (TCP/IP) and ,make sure the radio buttons are on Obtain an IP address automatically. Close by clicking OK to close. By default, this should get it working unless you have other things like a couple of network cards on your PC or the laptop has many connections and this would call for some more instructions. Hope this helps,:).

  2. leech?  Odd selection of words.

Yes it is possible to do that using a "cross-over" ethernet cable.

You will find that the only time the second pc will be able to access the internet is when the laptop is actually turned on.  That is why plugging into the router for each machine is better

to allow each independent internet access.

My first instinct would be to move the pc to where the router is and use a standard ethernet cable.

    between modem and router

and then another between router and pc.

Be careful that your wifi connection is not coming from outside the home, because that is illegal, and you can be sued in civil court.  It's not worth the risk.

  3. Yes its possible, using the in built Internet sharing wizard on the laptop and setting up a small peer to peer network between the computer and the laptop using a crossover Ethernet cable.  This is important!!  you NEED a crossover cable, with 2 of the wires reversed at one end, to do this type of connection.

Ill see if there is a guide for this on line save me typing out on line instructions, will edit this soon as i find one.

    EDIT - found :-
