I am a full time librarian assistant. I have some college work completed and library experience. Would really like to stay working with the library for a long time. I see an opportunity in Tech Services. I am young, learn fast, and follow directions well.

  1. For some positions -- cataloger, acquisitions librarian, database maintenance librarian -- you will probably need a library degree, and they are not likely to be flexible on this requirement.  Chances are, though, that some position will fit your experience & education.  The biggest challenge will be waiting for an opening: technical services staff tend to stay a _long_ time.

Talk to the head of your tech services department and let him/her know that you are interested in any opportunities there.  In the meantime, ask your supervisor about opportunities for cross-training.

  2. I do Tech support in my library and was working as a reference librarian before that.

To go to Tech, you will need some IT skills and you can ask for transfer to that section. Hands on is still the best for a Systems Librarian after acquiring some IT knowledge because library systems work differently. But you have an advantage of knowing library skills. That is an essential in supporting library systems.
