How do I learn how to plan things?

My main concern is in art..

Since I am in high school, I get to paint or draw whatever I choose..

My problem is I get an idea for the main subject, but I don't plan it out, I just throw it together randomly and it ends up with a terrible composition, not to mention I don't really think of what colors to use, I finally have the freedom expression I wanted, but I don't know what to do with it, what should I do??! and how do I get motivated to actually plan this stuff out so I know what I'm doing?

Think of things that inspire you and begin making a list....next, for each thing that is an inspiration- make an outline of all the colors, images, people, etc that make you think of that particular subject.

Once you get your outline, it will provide a sense of direction and focus for you.
