Question:

How do I learn to hit the TaylorMade Burner Draw club?

I have been really trying to play the game of golf and sometimes I can really drive the ball but a lot of times I slice it. I purchased the TaylorMade Burner Draw club thinking it would help with my slice and now I have trouble making contact with the ball. This club is supposed to be weighted to take care of the slice and the club head looks like its curved back so you are hitting the ball squared instead of it being more open. But instead of it doing that, I am now making poor contact on the ball and at times still slicing it.

  1. I played a fade with my driver...really a slice for 20 years.  I spent a week on the range working on only 2 things:

    a.  Playing the ball in the middle of my stance

    b.  Taking the club back inside instead of outside

Watching people address the ball 80% of them play the ball way too far forward and you can predict they will slice it and they do.  If you line up in the middle of your stance, it is so much easier to take the club back inside.  Practice this until you start hitting hooks. It will happen.  Only then carefully move it about an inch forward....no more.

Oh yeah, most people who line the ball too far forward don't believe they are doing it.  Get in a good routine to set yourself up correctly by asking your buds where you are aimed.

If you always do what you always did, you always get what you always got.  Break the habit.  It worked for me and became ingrained quicker that I expected.  I hit about 80% of the fairways and am now easily outdriving my buddies.....a perc.

    Good luck

  2. Great answer rjmack.  A slice is caused by an open club face and usually a steep swing path.  I'm in lessons now and I'm working on losing my slice as well.  There are probably two main things you can do.

    1) Take lessons from a professional where they video tape you and show you where you can improve.

    2) Read a golf book or two.  I think there is a guy named Dave Pells who a lot of people like.

    Good luck!

  3. I would suggest going to the driving range, and focus on your swing.  Put a tee in the ground, but take the ball off, and focus on good swings that tick the tee.  Then try it with a ball, and focus on good swings, not so much where the ball goes.  There was an article in a recent magazine that you can swing with the driver starting with the club at the top of your back swing.  Put masking tape on the face of the club.  You should see ball strikes in the center top of the face.

After you get the swing hitting the ball consistently, then focus more on direction.

  4. You must learn to swing normally first. Then you put your normal swing on the club and it should draw due to its design.

  5. If you slice the ball, dont expect a draw weighted club to be a huge help.  A slice swing will produce a slice regardless of the club you're swinging.  The problem with slicers is this.  What you feel you should be doing to help a slice actually makes it worse.  Slicers want to swing the club to the left.  All this does is make you swing more outside and in and thus, impart more sidespin.  Dont mistake swinging left with releasing the club.

  6. The TaylorMade Burner Draw is 46" long. At that length, it takes fractionally longer to get the club head back to the ball. The same swing that hits a straight shot with a 44" shaft, will likely leave the club face open a bit with a 46" shaft due to the length difference.

Assuming for a moment that your swing plane is OK, that club is new to you and you need to learn how to hit it. Slow down and focus on contact. You have to walk before you run.
