How do I list a posting on main yahoo, google, etc. pages to supply my website and company information?

I am starting a home business and the company I will be representing will supply me with a website. I want to get the link to my website and some details when people to searches they can find me. I believe the major search engines are the best way to do this however I'm not sure how exactly to do this.

There are couple of ways to get a site found easily. First you can pay for key words. Both Yahoo and Google will do it. When someone enters the specific words in a search your entry comes up at the top.

The second way is free. You must first enter metadata in the html giving the search terms you would like to use. This will put you in the list but you can be many pages down. What raises your position is the number of links to your site from other sites.

Note that this information is from things I have heard over the years. I have no direct experience.
