Is it better to use private investigators? I only know the year she was adopted and the name of the hospital where she was born.

  1. Most states have closed adoption records. So yes you will need a private investigator.

A question? Is it wise to look for someone who may not know she's adopted or who has NOT come looking for you? That's a ball of hot fire that you need to think about. Don't mess up someone's world because you are being Ms. Busy Body! I'm adopted and I know I'm adopted, but I'm unsure how I'd feel is this AUNT comes out of the blue; I'm 36. So be careful because by opening her up to you, YOU are also opening yourself up to questions. Now she will say well 'where is my bioMom and bioDad'; it's natural. So becareful before you mess up someone's life!

Think this through and don't be driven by your own selfish needs. Analyze why YOU really want to see her? Do you have good motives or are they selfish. Why aren't her bioMom and bioDad seeking her and just you. Doesn't seem logical to me. You may want to know her, but does she really NEED to know you?

  2. Is either birth parent or a birth sibling in the picture who would be interested in possible contact with the adoptee?  The reason I ask is that Maryland has a registry for adoptees/birth parents/birth siblings.  It also has a Confidential Intermediary system, by which an appointed intermediary would contact the adoptee on behalf of one of the birth parents to see if the adoptee would like contact.

Here is some information about it.

    Using a Confidential Intermediary:

Adopted adults age 21 or older and birth parents of an adopted adult age 21 or older may apply to the Director of the Social Services Administration to use the State's search, contact, and reunion services.

    Using the Adoption Registry:

Adopted adults age 21 or older, birth parents, and birth siblings age 21 or older may register.
