I want to install Picture hooks and a wall mounted heater into several places around my new apartment but are frightened of drilling into the existing wiring and electrocuting my dumb self. Do typical wire tracers work on brick walls?

  1. As long as you don't drill holes deeper than 3/4 of an inch you should be fine. If the wall is covered with plaster it should be safe. Just to be safe however don't drill or knock in nails obove or below outlets. Sometimes outlets are wired from other outlets on the same wall, so the wiring could go sideways as well as up and down. Your best bet is to ask a contracter who has a wire detecter to check the walls. Some detecters can detect water, wood, plastic and off course wiring THREE FEET UNDERGROUND!~!!

  2. you will not need to do that because of the fact that the screws will not go through the entire thickness of the brick.

  3. Not realy, the wire most likely is from the attic to the outlet so as long as you are not directly over the outlet you are probably ok.Sometimes the outlets are dasey chained from a near by outlet but those wires would only be <2 ft off the floor. However this is an apartment and as such you better not do it unless the landlord gives you the ok.He/she should be the person doing it anyway.
