Hey, I'm new to driving, and my driving instructor told me last week that I need to show him that I know how to perform a lock to lock turn?

I forgot all about it until the night before, and I feel like an idiot. Can someone explain to me what a lock to lock turn is? Time is a factor here.. {:3

  1. In this context, the "lock" he's talking about is the point at which you can't turn the wheel anymore - For example, if you're sitting still and just turn the wheel, you can only turn it so far in either direction - when it stops moving, you've hit the "lock".

While I've never heard of something called a lock-to-lock turn, I know that on my driving test (in 2003) I had to demonstrate what is called a "three-point turn", in which you would have to make a U-turn on a two-lane street by turning the wheel all the way to the left (and you might hit the lock by doing so) then driving to the edge of the opposite side of the street, putting it in reverse and spinning the wheel all the way to the other lock, to start straightening the car, and then you would turn the wheel back again so that you'd be facing the opposite direction on the street. I would have to assume this is what he's talking about.

It's kind of hard to describe, you might want to check out this link: http://www.ehow.com/video_1870_make-thre...

    Best of luck!

  2. Lock is turning the steering wheel all the way in one direction, then the other...Like completely to the right till it locks, then all the way to the right till it locks.

  3. With no traffic behind you or coming toward you, turn to the right or left until you are perpendicular to the street.

Put the car in reverse. Back up straight across to the other side of the street as far as possible.

Put the car in drive or, in manual cars, first gear. Check traffic again.

Turn the wheel all the way in the direction you want to go, and step on the gas lightly to complete the turn.

Straighten yourself in the lane and drive away.
