Question:

How do I maintain a garden?

I moved into a place that has beautiful gardens all around the 2 acres of land I have. They are getting overgrown. I want to continue watering them, but they're starting to get become to much. I don't know what to do, how to trim them, or what belongs, and what doesn't. Most of the plants seem to grow well in the hot sun, and it appears they make it to grow back after the snow in the winter.

Thanks for any help!

  1. Wow, two acres, huh?  That's a lot of garden, and a lot of work!!!

The first thing you have to do is identify the plants growing there so you know what to work with.  Sun and water are necessary for good growth but also don't forget the fertilizer.  Plants have various needs, like people do, for nutrients.

To start out with, cut off any yellow or diseased leaves.  Check for pests in and around the plants and in the soil.  Remove diseased and dead plants and start a compost pile.

You can trim plants back and it's always best to trim back to a node or a stem, with a flush cut to the stem or a 45-degree angle off a stem.  This often promotes more growth.

You can ask neighbors, ask your extension office for free advice, read up on garden books.  It looks like the previous owners planted the flora in the right place and all the plants need now is steady maintenance.  But because I don't know where you live and what kind of plants you have, the only sound recommendation I have is to first identify what plants you have.

Then make sure you have the proper tools to work with.  They will require care, too.

  2. I'm so jealous-that's a lot of garden!

I think gardening is a great method of exercise and I use it as my ‘get away from the world’ time! However, when I first moved into my new home I was worried as I had a huge space to work in but I lacked ideas and knowledge so 6 months later I still had a big patch of weeds! Not good for BBQ parties!

Anyway, I read some books and got a little more confident but the best information I came across was this online book that took me through ideas step-by-step. I was able to create an impressive looking garden. My friends thought it was so good they didn’t believe I had created it-everything from the correct soil to what plants would look right.

A garden should be an extra room of your house-enjoy it.

  3. Don't water  every day. And when you mow. Bag the grass and put around your plants. It keeps the weeds out and also it keeps the moisture in. Good luck.

  4. It would be nice for you to learn.......but the first time out you might try a pro gardener and watch and take some advice. Pruning and weed removal wood be my first concern and probably make your life a whole lot simpler. It sounds fantastic everyone's dream.......a lovely garden.....have fun
