I am thinking about buying a Trek Pilot 2.1, but I have never maintained a bicycle. On YouTube, I've seen videos about bicycle maintenance and it seems to be easy. Is there anyway to find someone who will show me how to maintain a bicycle?

  1. get tutorials from parktool.com

sometimes, depending on how many bike stores you have, they have classes on general maintenance. Check local bike clubs and non-for-profits (trail organizations)

  2. To find out how to do almost anything on any bike, you should always start with what the late, great Sheldon Brown had to say: www.sheldonbrown.com

    HTH

  3. Pick up bicycling magazines "Complete guide to bicycle maintainance and repair", it a lot easier to keep a book next to your bike stand than a computer and it's cheaper when you knock it over.

  4. Taking care of your own bike isn't difficult. You can get tons of info on the web. Check out sites like this and many others. Bicycle maintenance books are available most anywhere. Hands on training can be had via workshops offered by some bike shops and continuing ed. programs. Many times you can get plenty of help from fellow cyclists, especially if you join a club.

  5. I have learned most of the work I carry out on my road and Mountain bike using this great web site.  http://www.parktool.com/repair/index.asp

    Hope that helps.

  6. Most bike maint is common sense.  Cables stretch; adjust the tightness.

    Brakes wear out; replace them.

Derailleurs can be adjusted to line up with sprockets correctly. Look for two small adjusting screws.  One limits the inboard limit.  The other limits the outboard limit.

Wheels wiggle?  Adjust spokes with a spoke tool.

Get tire tools, small plastic paddles to take tires off.

  7. If you start riding, you'll meet people, and you can talk with them about things, and pick things up as you go.

All the aforementioned items are excellent.

I personally use the Park Repair Book

Zinn and the Art of Bicycle repair is good as well.

    Good Luck,

    Ride Lots!
