I have to make a document 4' by 32 ' for a building banner. But Illustator doesn't allow more than 18 feet...what should be done in cases like this? I can't think of a way but I'm sure there has to be a solution..

  1. Illustrator works with Vector images. Vector images are scalable. So create a workspace that is 2' x 16', or 1' x 8', whatever size that keeps the aspect ratio. The printer will be able to scale the provided file to the size required.

You will run into trouble if you import raster images (jpeg, gif, png, tiff, etc). Raster images do not scale and are dependent on the number of pixels available. Though if you increase the dpi of the imported image you will minimize the distortion. The dpi increase needs to happen at the source, not within the document.
