  1. Keep trying - sometimes works, sometimes not!

  2. you are nearly correct 00 86 then the area code

    i.e shanghai - 21 then number

  3. Make sure you are not dialing the initial zero which might be shown in front of the Chinese area code, e.g. if the number you have is 0755 xxxx-xxxx you should dial it as 00-86-755-xxxx-xxxx.

    Edited to add:

"Anyone know the area code for Changzhou, in Jiangsu province? "

According to my lists it is 0519, so from the U.K. it would be dialed as 00-86-519 plus the local number.

  4. You can sometimes get it to work by waiting a beat between the numbers. Like 00 (wait) 86 (wait) 12345. I found I had to do this when dialing the UK from Germany before the went digital.

Also, you need to make sure you are using the area code (10 for Beijing). This site might help, if you don't know it http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/di...

  5. My sister lives in china and i live in the uk.

We speak through Skype, or I use an 0845 number which charges you 1.5p per minute to use. Send me an e-mail and I will give it to you.
