How do I make a composting bin?

I have a garbage can and want to know if i should drill holes, if so where? What do you put in it? and how many worms should I put in it?

  1. I don't think you are going to be able to use a trash can for several reasons.

    Compost bins needs to be constructed in a way they can be flipped over to stir up the stuff inside and have plenty of aeration. Drilling holes is not going to accomplish that.

    If you look at commercially made compost bins, they are usually about the size of a 55 gal. barrel and have a stand the barrel can rotate on. There is usually a 3" PVC pipe attached from one end to the other with a opening at each end and 1/2" holes drilled into the PVC. Then a trap door is cut into the side of the barrel for putting in and removing material. On the inside of the barrel there are fins attached to the side which causes the material to tumble instead of sliding along a smooth surface.

    So you see, there's a lot more than just putting stuff in a container & you won't get the results you are looking for with a trash can at all.
