How do I make a decorated rugby ball?

I'm going to enter a craft competition "decorated rugby ball".

Can anyone give me any tips on how to do this?

I was thinking buying a cheap one and painting it?

Anyone have any other ideas, or design ideas and how I could do it?

you could decoupage it with paper from rugby matches or photos.

Go to some craft stores and get some ideas. make a center piece, paint it, christmas lights held on with twist ties and garland glued on to fill in, make wire frame first to hang by then add lights and garland. glitter, get some ideas and work with in your budget. when you have an idea , check out the thrift stores for supplies. let your mind go wild . this is based on imagination right?
