Question:

How do I make a game out of a Periodic Table?

I have to make a game based on the periodic table

Here are the standards we could put in the game:

1. Students know how to relate the position of an element in the periodic table for it's atomic number and mass

2. Students know how to use the periodic table to ID, metals, semi-metals, non-metals, and halogens

3. Students know how to use the periodic table to ID alkali metals, alkaine earth and transition metals, trends in ionization energy, electronegativity, and the relative size of ions and atoms

4. Students know that the nucleus of the atom is the most dense.

The more standards you put in the game, the more points you get in the project, but I have no idea what game to create. Can anyone help me think of one? Or at least give me some ideas?

  1. Card games already exist that are based on the periodic table. I haven't actually seen any of them open, but they are supposed to be learning games, and may be what you are looking for. You will probably have to go to a local retail game store and order them. Or you may be able to order them online. I listed two Websites for you to peruse at your leisure. - LJS

  2. you could make it like a bingo

make a dice or some sort of random chooser to pick a metal, atomic number, charge, etc. (instead of saying J4 you will say "an alkali metal with 4 rings" or "a halogen with an atomic number of __", etc.) and then whoever gets the entire periodic table, or whatever you decide, first wins; but they actually have to have elements that match what you called out, this will make sure that people actually know where to find these things on the period table

you could also make a board game, where you would roll the dice, then land on an element, then draw a card that asks a question regarding the periodic table (Is this element an alkali metal? What is this element's atomic number? etc.) if the person gets it wrong then start at the very beginning, if they get it right they get to stay where they are and roll and continue moving the next turn; this will also make sure people actually know what is what on a periodic table
