  1. Using light colored walls will allow the room to look bigger.

Also, depending on how you walk into the room, try not to place furniture where the back is showing or will have to be walked around. If this is the only spot for a larger peice, like a couch, try to make room to place a table to dress up the back. If it is a chair, try putting a plant. You want it to look like the beginning of the room and not the end.

Mirrors are an "excellent" way to bring in the illusion of space. Nice big ones will always bring in space and lighting. If possible, place one directly across the window. Use one that is as big or bigger than the window. There are lots of possibilities with mirrors. They can be purchased inexpensively at department stores, in many different styles and very rich looking ones. If you like the vintage look, search through second hand stores, flea markets and best of all garage sales. You can do a wall collection with different size mirrors. Start going to garage sales and picking up different sizes and styles. When you have your collection together, paint them to match and hang them up! Now, you have a really beautiful custom made wall, that was not very expensive.

In my opinion, having lots of different colors makes a room look smaller or closed in. Keep your color scheme small. No more than three main colors and one of those being just an accent color.

Another good idea is tall curtains. If you can't go ceiling to floor, go as tall as you can. You can even go wider to make the window look bigger all around.

If you are going to use an area rug, choose one with little to no pattern and not lots of color. Choose a simple pattern, so the eyes don't venture down, to the floor, to the size of the room. You want the eyes to travel around the room, with ease, and not stuck on the floor.

Another thing is to have good lighting. Whether it is added with lamps or new lighting from above, lighting is very important.

Large furniture can be used in small spaces, as long as all the pieces are consistent, in size. If small pieces are added in, the large pieces will look out of place and to big for the room.

Remember, these are my opinions. The most important thing is how comfortable and happy you are in your own space. If you decide to have a thousand colors and a rug with a dozen more, this is your room!!

    Best of luck!
