How do I make a store bought cake better with other ingredents

I usually substitute 1/2 the oil with applesauce. But how about chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit?

Use ground flax seed, about 1/4 cup...

It makes it fluffy & moist, adds omega-3, & you will NEVER know it has a "secret ingredient". Now when I make cakes without it, it doesn't taste good...

Well, all the other answers seem to be about a cake mix, which is not what the question was about.  

Poke some hole in the cake with a wooden spoon handle, squeeze some chocolate syrup or and other kind of ice cream sauce, into the holes, the ice the cake or just drizzle hot fudge sauce over the top.  Quick and easy and soooo good.  

Another great and easy recipe is to slice a store bought bundt cake in half crosswise and scoop a little of the cake out and fill it with some pudding.  Put the cake on top and drizzle some icing.   Viola!! Boston Cream Pie.    

Another good one is to, again, poke holes, mix 1 small can cream of coconut,1 can sweetened condensed mild, and 1 can good rum,  pour into the holes and top with drained can of crushed pineapple, then top with cool whip.Refrigerate for a few hours.  ( I usually make a 13 X 9 yellow cake mix , Duncan Hines to do the recipe, but Im sure you could use a store bought cake)

I put an two bananas in mine tonight and it is awesome.  I put it in a yellow cake mix.

scoop out some cake inside add whatever filling suits the flavor, frost it and viola! the perfect surprise

you can also top it with icing/frosting...

garnish it with chocolate...

or u can cut it in half (if its plain) using a cookie cutter cut our shapes/circles from it and frost/decorate it ... there you have it!

you just made more cakes!

I like to add a packet of vanilla pudding to it.  Makes the cake richer.
