  1. actually, to get the totally awesome rustic look. You leave the wood sign outside in the sun, wind and rain. After it starts weathering, bring it in and varnish it..nothing like a natural rustic look.

  2. you can put sun burn marks on it. go out side with your wood get a magnifying glass and use it to put burn marks. or  use a torch to do the lettering and the go to the craft store and get some wood gloss to paint the finish on.

  3. Use a propane torch and scorch the sign slightly in an uneven manner. Don't over scorch it.

  4. The scorching will look good.  Something else you can do is take a wire brush and brush very quickly with the grain.  This will remove the softer wood tissue and leave the harder grain giving the board a very rough texture.

  5. I think it is dependent on if you want a cowboy southwestern rustic, tuscan rustic or a clean rustic.

Believe it or not there are huge differences between these three styles.

Southwestern is the most "aged" looking. It is the type of look that will give you splinters.

Tuscan has more reddish brown to it and is usually beat up and old looking but is still in good shape.

The Clean look is usually a darker wood with a more sheen finish to it but has been beaten with chains, chainsaws and anything that will give it a non-straight edge look.

    Hope this helps.

  6. try to sand it or brush it to a rough look ,the get some rustic paint and spary it the go over it again with sand paper or brush ,then when done get you a water seal paint that will give it a high gloss and brick the color out.

    Good Luck

  7. leave it outside in the weather.
