You need to have the Wireless Gaming Receiver, even if you use the USB cord. Here's a link that tells you about it, if you don't know what I'm talking about:

Just buy that, install the software on the CD that's included with it, then plug in the wireless receiver to any USB slot on your computer, and your controller will work. You can either play with or without the USB cord connected to your controller (if you play with it, it will charge the battery, if you have the rechargeable battery in the controller).
