How do I make an open ground outlet grounded

  1. If there is a grounding connector in the circuit, connect to that.  If the system is attached to conduit, the metal box will have a grounding s***w to which you attach a grounding wire.  You must change the outlet.  Find the proper circuit breaker and turn off the power.  Remove the s***w from the plate.  Pull out the outlet with the wires (once you have removed the 2 screws)  You should see the connection and the ground wire (or grounding s***w.  An open ground outlet in a box should have some type of ground in the system. (NEC Code).  If it is an old wiring system (prior to WWII) you will have to trace and pull new wires.  You will want to replace the 2 with 3 new ones.  Black, white, and green.  Black hot, White neutral, Green Ground.  If it becomes that complicated call a professional.  Safety is the key.


  2. To do it correctly a wire needs to be connected from the outlet to the breaker panel.  Alot of times when outlets are open ground they only installed 2 wire with no ground so you may have to fish it up the wall and through the attic to get it done.
