Question:

How do I make copies from textbooks?

So, I work as a TA at a summer program teaching gifted children. The instructor that I work with wants me to make copies of a couple of pages from a textbook. Typically, I'm used to making copies of just a single page; that's easy, just feeding it into the slot. However, I can't do that with a textbook. I can't stick it on the large scanning surface, either, because it's too thick to close the top, so a lot of light gets let in. So, how would I make a copy so these poor students have their learning materials? I can ask the instructor once class starts at 7 tonight, but I'd like to try to have the copies made by then.

  1. Make the best and clearest copy you can.

    Trim dark edges.

Copy the copy and this will be your "original."

Make as many copies as you need but not to exceed limit for educational purposes.

    Include citations.

  2. The top doesn't have to be closed to get a copy--if it comes out a little different you have to change the dark-light settings.--Try it, it will work

  3. If you are not familiar with making copies in various ways I would just ask your instructor to show you. that way you will know how next time.

  4. You could try taking the book to Office Depot or Max to have them make the copies for you. Is there a way you could contact the instructor before class starts tonight?

  5. Usually you have to risk breaking the glass on the scanner top by pushing down on the top to disallow light from getting in, this is usually good enough.  The edges will be dark, but the text should be ok.

  6. If you have to copy with the top open, you can make a "mask" of plain white paper all around the outside of the glass with the book in the middle. This will avoid the thick black border you get when the scanner attempts to scan the ceiling of the room.

Just lay out the paper and tape it together to keep it from moving every time you flip the page. DO NOT tape it directly to the glass. You'll gum everything up.

P.S. If these kids are so gifted, they should be able to figure it out for you. :-)
