Yesterday I got two new goldfish (1 common and 1 commet) to add to my 20 gallon. Don't worry when they grow bigger I will upgrade to a bigger tank. I was always able to handfeed my other goldfish but these don't seem to trust me. How can I make them trust me and like me more?

  1. right now they're probably a little stressed from being moved from the store to yout house, so that's part of it. feed them everyday at the same time, eventually they might let you handfeed them. if they're in your room, try to have a schedule of the lights being on/off. pets usually like having a schedule or they get confused and/or stressed. don't move suddenly when you are near them or they could get scared.

also, if you buy some real underwater plants and put them in there they will probably really like that, my local pet store sells them. my fish seem to like them (they're commets), but make sure to get cleaner shrimp and if your pet store has it 'fertilizer'. you just pour a bit into the water and it helps the plants grow (it does not hurt the fish).

if you make them happy then they probably will trust you better, and you can see that they are happy.

  2. Comets are not as friendly as other goldfish. They are skitish and scared for sudden movements. They are very wild goldfish and you should feed them food that makes them want to have more. Flake does not do the trick. Feed them bloodworms and brineshrimp. They will beg you for more. Feed them once a day so that they are not always full. If they are hungry they are friendlier. Hope this helps. If you want a fish that eats out of your hand a lot get a koi, clown knifefish or a red tail catfish.

  3. who cares?! theyre freaking FISH! theyre just decorations

  4. Be consistent, feed at the same time every day, keep the food in the same place, feed them the same way every day and watch them often.

  5. Hope you are able to keep these ones longer than your other fish.  Maybe just leave them alone and let them get used to the tank and surroundings.  You're going to need to upgrade to about a 70 gallon tank for those 2 fish.
