  1. Canned goods are a great idea. Food help places always need more things to give away.   You probably do need tp work with a group that is lready set up rather than doing a nonprofit of your own.  Here's why.  To start a charity - a nonprofit organization- you need to incoprporate in the state where you are as a nonprofit organization. Depending on your state that will cost about $100-150 plus about twice that again for lawyers.   Then you need $500 - 700 for federal nonprofit status again plus lawyers fees.  There is also a long wait for this.  Incorporators also need to be legally adults on their state.   If this is a long term thing that you are going to work together on for years it may be worth that but otherwise you would probably do better and certainly quicker to put your efforts into supporting an existing charity.

    One year a boy scout troop  (Troop 140) set up a food collection at 3 grocery stores and asked people to give nonperishable food and things like TP and soap to help our ministry.  They got 3 vans full of great stuff in one Saturday that helped alot of people especially kids and senior citizens.   Another year a group got a pizza place to give $1 off to anyone who brought a can of food to help.   They got a great response and the pizza place said they got a number of new regular customers so everyone won.  You could see if you can set up a collection box at your school too. There is a school near us that mainly teaches kids with some attention problems or who are smart enough where public schools are boring. They call it "the Little School" They have only 41 students but at Thanksgiving last yr they had the kids ask their familes and neighbors if they could do chores to earn money to buy food for families in need.   They told us they had Thanksgiving Dinner for 4 families.    There were 4 turkeys all right but there was enough other food, canned hams, canned chicken, veggies and a lot of extras that don't normally show up in a food collection to help a lot more than 4 families.   It was amazing.

    Besides food there are many creative and useful things you can do. One person who posted to you gave you especially good info about what she and her friends do.    Here are a few more.   Talk with your school counselor or your pastor and ask them to tell you about shelters in your area for kids who are homeless because of family violence, abuse, or just because their family is having a hard time.   Ask if you can get together books and games that don't take batteries for the kids there.   (batteries run out and then the game is useless if they can't get more) You might also be able to collect personal grooming things that are especially for kids.   After the hurricanes a church youth group donated zip lock plastic bags with kids toothbrushes and toothpaste with animals on the wrapper, no more tears type shampoo, wash cloths, soap,combs, etc.    You could do similar bags with fun stuff like coloring books, small stuffed animals or puppets.   Socks, undies, tshirts in various sizes and colors are always needed and in the winter hats and mittens.   Kids in a shelter often have to leave a lot of stuff behind and more can get lost in moving around.  You could do something like that and help a lot of kids or you mght want to do one big thing at a time like getting a piece of equipment for a children's hospital.   If you or someone in the group likes horses see if you can find a riding therapy program near you and offer to help out there.   You could also help with something like Special Olympics or have a run/walk for a kids charity.   Take the things you all really like to do and find a way to connect them to raising money of helping.

    As far as sending money to a bigger charity or finding a place to send the food if you want to stay local which you probably do for the food part anyway go to www.secondharvest.org  enter your zip code in the search and find the foodbank nearest you then ask them for a list of food pantries very close to you.  The foodbank is kind of like a wholesale place that supplies food to foodpantries to gove away. For any money you want to send you can either find a local helping group like the food pantry or ask the local United Way or acounselor at school to recommend  a group or do a web search for helping groups in places that interest you.   You can find groups in inner cities, in mountain places like where we are in the foothills of Appalachia, or in other countries.  You might even want to "adopt"achild through World Vision or a similar group.

    You and your friends are great for wanting to help.

  2. That is a very honorable venture!  Way to go!

    Try Craigslist Foundations

    They are currently helping me.

  3. That's really sweet of you. Me and my friends formed a group for other friends to join, we provide a ray of sunshine into the lives of sick children. We send toys/books/baby/toddler clothes/arts and crafts, etc.

    We then sent out letters to various children's hospices and asked if there was anything that we can do to help. Every year at my 4th of July party, I run a raffle and the money I raise goes to charity.

    Try getting your schools involved in a food drive, or perhaps ask your supermarket if you can set up a few boxes. Ask friends and family.  We send money twice a year to The Demelza House Children's Hospice, from 500 to 900.00 at a time. We do this, by simply saving our coins for a year. It sounds like a long time, but you can really acquire alot, by having a coin drive then sending one big check.

    Ask your school is you can have a "penny war". Which means all classes participate in gathering as many pennies that they can in any given time. The class that collects the most pennies, wins a pizza party.

    There are lots of things you can do. I wish you luck.

  4. find out from your local mosque, church or synagague. usually they always have info on several active and honest charaties.

  5. I think it'd be easier to send money rather than to make a charity of your own;

    Because making your own charity cost THOUSANDS of dollars

    So just make a funraiser; And send to liek st. just hospital or the red cross There's shelters too; where you can help at; And you can volunteer at school to read or help the mentally disabled; Or you can sign up to help children in Africa, you gotta pay for the trip urself though
