  1. with food coloring it's always best to add a little at a time, like only a couple of drops and then build on it.

there's a type of frosting called glace icing - it's about 1 part water to about 4 parts icing sugar and just stir it together literally takes a minute. it wouldn't be suitable for the filling of the cake but use it to cover it won't take long to set

  2. Here's a simple one and you can tint it any colour you like

    4 cups confectioners' sugar

    1 cup shortening

    2 tablespoons water

1 teaspoon clear imitation vanilla extract

    DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, combine sugar, shortening, water and vanilla. Beat on low speed to combine, then beat on medium speed for a full five minutes. It won't look like Icing at first, but keep the mixer going for a full five minutes, and then you're done!

Note: If you're not using this for decorating, but just for icing the cake, thin the icing by adding 3 tbs. of corn syrup, or water to the icing.

  3. You can make frosting with just powdered sugar, water and a little bit of vanilla. Depending on how big your cake is, start with a few cups of the sugar and then slowly add water, mixing it until the sugar has absorbed the water and you're happy with the consistency. If you want, you can add a drop of vanilla for flavor, but you don't have to. It's super easy!

  4. QUICK AND EASY FROSTING

1 (4 serving) pkg. sugar free pudding (any flavor)

    1 env. sugar-free whipped cream

    1 1/2 c. nonfat milk

Place all ingredients in small narrow deep bowl. Mix to blend gradually increasing beating speed to high. Beat 4-6 minutes. Makes 3 cups.

  5. 4-MINUTE BUTTER FROSTING

    1/3 c. butter

    Pinch of salt

    3 c. sifted powdered sugar

    1/4 c. milk or cream

    1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Cream thoroughly butter, salt and 1 cup powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add remaining powdered sugar and milk, alternately, blending until smooth and of spreading consistency. Add vanilla. Fills and frosts top and sides of two, 9 inch layers.

    CHOCOLATE BUTTER FROSTING:

Add 3 squares melted unsweetened chocolate to butter.

    LEMON BUTTER FROSTING:

Use lemon juice in place of milk. Omit vanilla.

    ORANGE BUTTER FROSTING:

Add 2 tablespoons grated orange rind and 1 unbeaten egg yolk to butter. Substitute orange juice for milk. Substitute lemon juice for vanilla.

hope these help.               good luck and enjoy.

  6. Quick and Easy Powdered Sugar Icing

    2 cups powdered sugar (sifted)

    1/2 teaspoon vanilla

    2 tablespoons milk

Mix the powdered sugar with the vanilla and milk. Then add more milk a bit at a time until it is thin enough to drizzle over a cake. Once you've iced your cake, it's best to let it stand for one or two hours.

To make chocolate icing, add two tablespoons cocoa powder when you mix the powdered sugar and follow the rest of the recipe above.
