How do I make steamed Indian rice like at the India Garden restaurant Chain?

This should be easy... Its just steamed rice, but its got some spices in it. It looks kinda like little fennel seeds, and maybe a cardamon pod or two, and its got a slightly salty taste.

Please no cut & paste recepies with rasins or other vegetable matter... Ive googled enough disgusting looking concoctions. I just want to learn what spices to add to my rice to make it come out like it does in a plain North Indian restaurant.

  2. The answer is Cumin seeds and the dish is called Jeera(cumin) rice or Cumin flavored rice.

Make sure you scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the video. Also, you can leave out the veges (they are optional)

    Enjoy!

  3. Use a good quality rice cooker and good quality Basmati rice. Good brands are Tilda, Royal, Arora....

Use a ratio of 1 cup rice: 2 cups water. The restaurants add a little butter or ghee and a pinch of salt when fluffing up the rice.

JEERA PULAO is what you are talking about. It's just cumin seeds. The easy way is to toss a tbsp or so of cumin seeds into the rice cooker with the rice. But the best way is the saute the cumin seeds in a little oil or ghee, add the rice (washed and very well drained). Stir until the rice becomes fragrant & shiny. Then add to the rice cooker with the appropriate amount of water.

That's it, very simple & tasty!!
