Question:

How do I make sure whether it is my router or not?

My connections has been so slow recently. I have ADSL 256Kb, my router is D-Link 500T. I contacted my ISP and they confirmed that nothing is wrong on their end but it usually disconnects and loads very slow on my end. As you know routers are not cheap in my country and I don't wanna rush buying a new one without double checking the real reason behind my slow connection. Any suggestions please?

  1. ummmm go to your router ip address. for example mine is 192.143.5.670

  2. if possible try to borrow another router for a few hours and see if it makes a difference. D link routers are pretty good, so it may be the cable, or if there are a lot of people using the same provider in one area that can slow things down too. there is only so much bandwidth and with everyone using it at once it can be really slow.

  3. I just fought with my router for a year over this same issue, only thing different is that with my win xp I kept getting a pop up saying that my connection was lost or a cord was unplugged. I have talked to some tech support people that the pop up was a friek thing but everything else said it was the router. I got it replaced and everything is perfect now, top speeds, no popups not losing connection. Everything is perfect.

The only way to test your router is to hook it up to a different computer that has absolutely no problems at all, or one that you know does not have a router problem. If it is doing the same thing, then replace your router. If not then you need to replace your ethernet card in the computer. They are both the same price, so no real money loss either way you go. I only paid about $25 for my new one.

  4. well you might want to upgrade your dsl mode as that is barely faster then dialup

but that being said you can check to see your speed via software there are 3rd party programs that will tweak your connection speed also depending on what you are dowloading and from where

some ISP throttle download speeds especially during peak hours and if you are over your monthly download limit

also P2P bozos do it too

how many people use your modem??

you probably dont need a router

more c**p in the configuration to slow it down

then theres the joy of virus trojans spyware maleware keylogging greyware and the like to play havock on your downloading

i can go on for hours but

    why
