Question:

How do I make the best homemade rat food?

Rat food is expensive. And they only eat some of the food in it. I want to make my own homemade mix of peanuts, walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds. Is there anything I need to include because my rats nutritionally need it?

  1. http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html

    that should help some =)

  2. Maybe you could try some lettuce or celery. Its probably much better to buy rat food though.

  3. rolled oats

    uncooked pasta

    puffed wheat

    puffed rice

    raw pumpkin seeds

    unsalted sunflower seeds

    dried bananas

    dried cranberries

Vital 100 (comparable to Total cereal)

    Toasted Oats (comparable to Cheerios)

    unsalted, roasted soy nuts

thats the best one you can get

  4. There are many rat diets that are CONSIDERED nutritionally, balanced but it is not clear which diet is the best for your rats.

One of the most popular rat diets is 'sue bee`s' rat diet which is used by many people. It consists of dry foods like grains, cereals, dried fruits, soy products, dry pasta, sunflower seeds and muesli. I feed this and found it reasonably cheap. Though could not find all the ingredients. But maybe you will have better luck than me!

    Here is the website:

Another one I would recommend is Debbie Commune diet. Though it is a very complicated diet and I would recon that it will cost allot more money and effort into making it than other diets, but if you are determined, have the time and enough money, go ahead. To me I have to agree that this looks like the best diet among others. But this is just my opinion.

I would also like to add that peanuts should not be part of the staple diet and should be fed as treats or tid bits. Sunflower seeds can be included in the staple diet but just not alot because of the protein levels.

    Good luck!

  5. i have been using homemade food recently and it has been working really well.My rats have never been so heathy.their coats are so shiny!i use beneful dog food natural flavor and squirral food.they eat every bite

  6. Pet store mixes are the absolute worst. They are very unbalanced!

Rats, or any other rodent, actually should not eat so many seeds at all. Seeds are incredibly fattening. In the wild, rats will eat grains, not seeds. And since grains have little protien, you will also need a seperate protien source, like dry dog food. As well, they should get other supplements in the form of fresh fruits and veggies.

I feed my rats what I consider to be one of the most well balanced diets, specificaly for rats. And it is also just about the cheapest thing you can buy.

It does involve a bit of hunting for you, but if you know of a store that carrier food items in bulk, you can get everything in one place, and for very little. The mix consists of mostly grains, high quality dog (or cat) food, as well as some other things.

  7. I use compressed pellets, I've also used rabbit pellets for my old rats, but I often give them fresh raw veggies and fruits to keep them healthy and for variety.

  8. do not feed your rat too much of what you listed.

you should only feed the sunflower seeds if anything.

do not feed your rat celerey.

try lots of fruits and veggies such as:

    carrots, grapes, lettuce, etc.

cut them up. add some bread.

you can feed them noodles and eggs also.

make sure these foods are unsalted.

and the sunflower seeds should be cracked and just the shell.

  9. What you listed is WAY incomplete and unhealthy. Way too many nuts and seeds.

Here are two common homemade diets for rats:
