I just installed XP and I put XP on a 20GB partition. I wanted a second partition for the rest of my hard drive. Now that XP is installed my C drive is 20gb and the rest is unallocated space. How do i turn that space into a usable drive?

  1. it is all here, step by step:

  2. If you go into your control panel and find the icon that says Administrative tools. The in there, there should be a disk management utility. Once in there you can create new partitions and manage them from there.

  3. 1st of all, the rest of the space should read something other than drive C correct? It should say D for G something along those lines.

What you need to do is to format that section so that it is in NTFS format. Once it is in NTFS, you can simply drag and drop files and folders.

To manage the paritions, you can use Norton Ghost, you can resize the partitions and make them smaller or even just totally undo the partition.

You can also use the Windows Disk management system but the GUI is not very user - friendly.

  4. Right Click on My Computer and click Manage.

    Click on Disk Management

Right click on the unallocated space and click Make Partition Active

Right click and format the drive

It may assign a drive letter on its own or you may have to select one by right clicking on it again.
