  2. Clamp meter is the safest and easiest way to determine current draw. This way you don't need to open the circuit to place a meter in line. Remember that your clamp should be over only 1 wire at any given time; if you were to place the clamp over a power cord you will read 0A.

    If you do not have a clamp meter, you can place a meter in line, only if it is rated at an amperage higher than what your measuring. Many meters are rated for only 1A, but some are rated for 10A. If your sure that your load doesn't exceed your current rating, you can place the meter in line.

  3. Safest way is with a clamp meter. They wrap around the wire with no opening of wires needed.
