  1. multiply length by width. for example, a room 10ft. long and 10ft. wide is 100 sq. ft. hope this helps.

  2. Measure and multiply. 12'x3'=36 sq.ft.

  3. If it is awkward shape, try laying some masking tape, long or in marker pieces, to divide the shape into rectangles.  Draw a sketch to help mark where you measure if that helps.  Measure all of the rectangles, compute the area of each (length times width), and add them up.

If you have a long tape measured in inches as well as feet and inches, it may be easier to measure everything in inches, compute the area in inches and then divide by 144 the number of square inches in a square foot.

If you only have a feet and inches tape, but can use a spreadsheet, then put the feet in one column and the inches in the next.  Then in a third column put a formula to divide the inches by 12 to get them as a fraction of a foot.  In a fourth column add the feet (col. 1) and fractions of a foot (col. 3) to get the measurement in feet.  If you are careful to put each rectangle down so length is in one row and width in the next, then in the fifth column you can put a formula to multiply the feet in that row times the one below.  If you then copy that formula into every other row,  you will have a column full of square feet calcs.  You can add the column to get total square feet.

  4. A square foot is different from a round foot or a pentagonal foot.  Remember, you may have waste.  Does your linoleum come in a certain width?  You may also want the pattern to run in a certain direction.  Length times width will give you the squares, but remember the other factors.  You can always trim off, but to add is tacky!

  5.   Width times the length  will get you the s/f..    You can do it in inches if you d like and divide  by 144 that ll get you the s/f also  GL
