How do I monitor the cpu's temperature?

I've just installed SP3 on XP and I don't know if it's a coincidence or not but my Cpu seems to overheat since I've done so. Is there a utility or an application that lets me monitor the cpu's temp. in real time? Thanks.

  1. CPU-Z

  2. Google something along the lines of "CPU Temperature Utility / Tool" and you should get a list of sources.

  3. Hi,

Speed fan should do the job. You can download it from the link below:

    Hope that helps

  4. There's a great little utility called Speedfan:

I'm also running XP SP3, but haven't noticed any increase in temperature. Have you checked the CPU load in Task Manager?

  5. Ok, now that's usually answerable if you could tell us what motherboard and chipset you use. Some motherboards do not have built-in temperature monitors, but the majority does. I recommend Almico's Speedfan, a free utility that allows you to check temperatures and modify fan speeds for a large number of machines. You can access it at http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php - if that doesn't work, check out your motherboard manufacturer's web site to see what utilities are available for it.

    Best of luck to you.

  6. I think something else is responsible for your overheating problem.  SP3 only includes security updates and added very little in the way of functionality to XP, which means that SP3 does not change anything in regard to hardware settings.  So I think your problem is a cooincidence unrelated to SP3.

You can go into BIOS and check your temperature operating settings and modify it.  YOu can also go to CNET Downloads and download several free utilities that will manually monitor the mobo temps, processor, etc.
