How do I obtain the medical records of my grandfather who was locked up in a mental hospital and died there?

The hospital owns those records so they won't give them to you.  Ask the next of kin to obtain them..  They should release copies of the medical records.

you can't unless you have authority to do so say from his estate, or executor of the will, or who ever is power of attorney or next of kin.

Most likely you would have to go thru the state system. In my opinion it will be along battle, with many phone calls, then eventually you will hit on one person that really cares to help you. So don't give up, I can't even obtain my sons and I am his legal guardian. Our rights are stated but their never carried out. A mentally unstable person has very few rights and it's sad. To me it's all a pretense to look good.

I wish you lots of patience and preseverance, you will need it, but it CAN be done. I wish you lots and lots of luck, and good caring people that will help you.

If you are an executor of his estate than you can get the information with NO problems.. Either get the executor to do it or get a court order

Go to the hospital and pick up the forms to obtain the copy of the medical records.They can not refuse you this form no matter who you are. If you are next of kin then there should be no problem if not you can still pick up the forms but you will have to have his wife , son or daughter notarize it. Sometimes they charge a fee for the copies.

are you the executor of the estate? Call the hospital for the first step, or his primary care provider if he had one recently/that you know of.
