  1. OpenOffice.org will open Word Docs from Word 2003 and earlier. Just open OpenOffice.org Writier and select File → Open....

When you installed OpenOffice.org, you were asked whether you wished to associate OpenOffice.org files with particular MS Office products. If you select these options, you should also be able to open files from MS Office 2003 and earlier by clicking on the file icons.

If you didn’t make this selection, then you will have to right-click on a file icon and select “Open with”.  Then if the OpenOffice, org module you want doesn’t show in the list of products, select “Choose default program...” and use the “Browse...” button to find the .exe you want to use. It will probably be in something like “C:\Progrram Files\OpenOffice.org 2.4”.

Be sure you check “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” to make OpenOffice.org the default program for this kind of icon. That way, whenever you click on this kind of icon, OpenOffice.org will open it automatically.

Note, the above applies to Windows only. If you are using another operating system, please check out whatever documentation you have to explain to you how to associate MS Office files with OpenOffice.org.

Or you can just reinstall OpenOffice.org again and this time be sure to select the associations when asked.

Mcirosoft Office 2007 introduced new files types: .docx, .xlsx, and pptx. These new files type you will be able to open with OpenOffice.org version 3.0, due to be released in the middle of September. If you can’t wait until then, you can download and install  a beta version of OpenOffice.org 3.0 from http://download.openoffice.org/3.0beta/ . This beta version can exist and work along side your current version of OpenOffice.org.

You can also delete your current version of OpenOffice.org and download instead one of two forks of OpenOffice.org: OxygenOffice from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ooop or Go-OO from http://go-oo.org/ . These forks already handle reading of Microsoft Office 2007 files.

  2. is this a matter of compatibility or that you just dont know how?

if it is a compatibility issue, then you cant do anything but use office to open your office documents.

If you dont know how to do it, do this:

find the document that you want to open (i suggest you copy it onto your desktop or flashdrive, but you can also do it if you just save it normally)

right click it, and click "Open with..."  (its usually 4 or 5 choices down)

then a list of programs will come up. all you need to do is select microsoft word, and presto.
