How do I organise a charity BBQ?

  2. First of all, I'm assuming this would be a BBQ where people buy tickets and thus are served food. The advice would be different if everyone is bringing a dish and you are soliciting donations.

    There are two keys:

    The first would be to minimize your expenses. This means tapping individuals and businesses to donate money, material, in-kind services, or volunteers to help out. If in the US, is the charity a 501 (c) (3) registered organization? If so, play up the "donations are deductible" angle.

    The second is publicity. Is there some kind of twist you can put on the event. Local celebrities as chefs? A pledge you'll only BBQ food created within 50 miles of the event? A vegan BBQ?

    Start early, get every volunteer you can lay your hands on, and draw up a time line with milestones so things get done in a timely manner.
