I have a beautiful picture by Tom Dubois/signed, but I want to put his picture up in our Church - the problem is I don't like the naked man in the corner of the picture or the fact that Jesus has long hair so I want to paint over it make it shorter - any suggestions how to paint over a print? What kind of paint should I use? It's not a canvas print just a regular print. THANKS!

  1. hmmm.

To strictly answer your question - you should not used anything oil based as that will rot the paper or card.  go for something water-based.

However - it's a signed print - do you really want to ruin its value by painting over it?  Also, as someone who dabbles in the odd painting myself, I'm not entirely sure you'd not be infringing copyright by changing the existing image - let alone what the artist would think if you did this.

From a technical point of view - I imagine you will have trouble matching the colours and most water-based paints dry with a distinctive matt finish - which is bound to be different from the original print.

Just because there are aspects i the picture that you personally do not like - that does not necessarily mean you should change it.  If you want it up in your church - speak to your Pastor or Priest and I am sure they will advise if it is suitable.

  2. It would be a copyright infringment to paint over it as fizzychip pointed out. Why don't you get some other sanitized picture that you don't have to change. Good luck on finding one of Jesus with short hair.
