Question:

How do I paint over vinyl???

I have a new vinyl sliding door. However it is white and stands out really bad against the warm toned walls. (I didn't have a lot of color choices on the sliding doors.) I can't stand to leave this white and want to paint it to match the walls. However, I know not to just paint over the vinyl. Can I use something to help it keep from chipping? Like a clear coat on top or something else? Does anyone have any ideals? This door will be used a lot. So the paint job will have to hold up. Thanks in advance..

  1. I think you just need to put primer on it.  If you go to the home improvement store and explain what you're trying to do, I'm sure they will tell you exactly what you need.  Good luck!

  2. I have been a painter since the 1970's You might want to get a primer called "Gripper".  It is made by Glidden and you can find it at Home Depot. Paint a small spot. Give it 24 hours then see if you can scratch it off with your fingernail. If not prime the whole door and when dry paint with the color you want.   Gripper should do the trick. I always do a little test first to be sure that it is adhering well before painting the whole door.

    Good Luck!

  3. If you could mask it off you could use fusion spray paint. I think it made for plastic and vinyl  Walmart sells it and it is made by Krylon.
