Question:

How do I pay for college with my current situation?

I am 19 and about to start my freshman year of college (I only really have like 6 credits i completed last year). My financial situation is really freaking me out right now.

So I was recently, well, kicked out of my mom's house and I now live with my dad. If I file my FAFSA, my mom has to be on it, but she makes quite a bit of money so i don't qualify for much at all, and she WILL NOT pay a dime. Like I said, I live with my dad now, who CAN NOT pay for my school. He's chronically ill, unable to work, and basically living on disability from the Military and Social Security, etc.

I am concerned about this right now. I am going to a local community college right now, but with lab fees, books, etc. It's still mad expensive. And I am planning to transfer in a year or two....so please help me figure out how to pay for this. OH and my credit is kinda sucky...I appreciate ANY advice you can give me!

  1. Why can't you use your dad on the app again?  If you absolutely can't use your dad's info then community college isn't the worst option; it's alot cheaper and a good transition from high school to college.  Make sure you get your papers in on their deadline, and sign up for the Pell grant.  It's a lifesaver!  If it doesn't help that much then search your little butt off for scholarships and apply to your hearts content.  Go for it!

  2. If you have not already filed your 2008-2009 FAFSA, because you are currently residing with your dad and expect to remain with him  during the upcoming school year, you would provide his information (and spouse if remarried) because he will be providing for more than half of your support.

If you have already filed your 08/09 FAFSA with your moms info, you should contact your financial aid office and explain your situation.

  3. When I went to college I was faced with financial difficulties too. The way i pulled if off was i decided to join the military. I joined the army but the Navy has the best education program out of all the branches. I don't regret it I even got many other benefits besides education.

  4. If your parents are legally divorced and you are living with your dad and he supports you, then he is the only parent whose information you are required to fill out on the FAFSA form. From my understanding of the form, that is how it works for divorced parents. Now, if your father is remarried, you would also have to report your step-mothers information. If you are better off by reporting your fathers income because it is less, then that may be your best bet if you are able to do that. From here, make sure to include any schools that you are considering on the form for the govt to send the information to. That way each school can send you a financial aid package, and many times these notices will help students make up their minds as to where to go to school. Keep up the good grades, too, and the money will come.
