How do I pay for purchases from American websites?

If I purchase something from an American website will they accept either my British debit card or my British paypal? (if they use paypal) How are the pounds in my account converted to dollars for the purchase and do I have to do anything or is the change in currency just done electronically?

Paypal is international. So are credit cards. They will do the currency conversion for you. You'll know how much they deducted when you look at your statement later.
