I overdrew my US Bank account about 2 years ago when I hit some real hard times (I was laid off while on vacation and didn't get my vacation pay). I understand what I did was wrong, but at the time I had no choice.

For the last 6 months I have been trying to pay this debt off in full and it seems to be almost impossible. I contacted US Bank and was told they sold the debt to another company, so I called that company. I was then informed they had sold the debt to another company as well. Now this is where the situation gets a little difficult. I called the number to this new company and got a voicemail that sounded as iff a teenager recorded it and all it said was "we are not available please leve your name, phone number, and social security number and we will call you back." Well I didn't not feel comfortable leaving my social security number so I just left my name a nd phone number. I waited 3 days and called back and I got an answer. I was then informed that the debt had been sold to another agency, so I got that phone number from the lady and called right away to the new agency. Well I got the EXACT SAME voicemail message, so once again I just left my name and number. I waited tell the next week and called back and someone answered. It appears that the debt had only been moved to another department, not sold to a different agency. I told the lady what was going on and asked if she could send me a statement. I was promply told no they don't send out statments. I asked if I could make a payment over the phone and she told me no, they don't take payments over the phone either. I asked how am I suppose to make a payment and I was told that I can send a money order or casheirs check. She then told me that when I am ready to pay I should call and get the exact amount and the address to mail it to. I was told if I don't like it I can wait tell they sell the debt to another agency.

I talked to someone and they said I coudl make a payment arrang, ent through Chex Systems and I was given a number but that number is vlicemail for if you want to order a report (and I did). But I want to get this debt paid off, and start working towards fixing my credit.

  1. You didn't say how long it had been since the bank labeled it as default.

I had a problem like this with a bank as well. After five years of fighting with agencies who never wanted my money, the account ended up back at the bank. It turned out that when banks in the US sell these default accounts to agencies they don't really sell them, they rent them out. Given that info, the bank had the info the whole time and I could've paid it off. If you contact the bank again and ask to speak with a bank manager tell them that you know you can pay it off with them, and you want them to recall the file so that you can pay. Explain to them that you tried to pay with the agency and they won't take your money.

After 7 years the debt is no longer on your file.

  2. The next time you need to leave a message with your ssn, do so but say something like this: " This is Tom Jones, my Social Security ends in 1234 and I can be reached at 555-555-5555; please call me at your earliest convenience because I would like to make my payment in full"  You will no doubt get a response, but without leaving your entire ssn, which they obviously do not need.

    Good luck!!
