I am currently stationed in South Korea and am trying to figure out how to place a call to 800 or 866 numbers originating in the united states. I have home phone service through LG Dacom, and a cell phone that is prepaid for use in Korea and the states, but I can't figure out how to make phone calls to 1-800 numbers. Any advice would be great, thanks!

  1. I'm surprised at the other answerer.  US cell phones do not and cannot function in Korea.  Also, I know of no calling cards that would allow you to call a "toll free" US number from Korea.

There is, however, a way as long as you have a high-speed internet connection.  Go to www.skype.com and download their free software and install it.  Use the easy to follow installation guide to set up a free account.  As soon as this is done, you can make free/unlimited phonecalls to anyone on earth that also has a Skype account and Skype will also let you call toll-free US numbers for free.  To call regular phones (or cell phones for that matter), you'll have to pay a fee, but even that is quite inexpensive.  The only hardware you'll need is a headset with a microphone.  You can get these for 8,000 or 10,000 won at any Hi-Mart.

  2. It's possible to place a call to an 800 or 866 number from Korea, but it won't be a toll free call.

    You need to dial 001-1-800-x*x-xxxx

  3. Your cell phone that is good in the U.S. should work, don't dial the 1 first, just the 800. If nothing else works you can buy a phone card and use their access number to dial the U.S.
