  1. Now this is a great question.

The biggest culprit behind chipping or breakage for daily-use items is when they bang together during the cycle.  Don't let anything in the dishwasher touch each other and be sure the items are secured in place by the tongs.  If something is awkward, be sure it has room or can lay flat.  (If it's like trying to force a puzzle piece, wash it by hand.)  Try to keep cups/round items on one side and dishes/flat items on the other if possible.

Also, stagger plates intermittently by size in their area -- like dinner plate, salad plate, dinner plate, saucer, charger plate, etc. (this also helps clean them better)

Flatware can touch of course, but don't put two spoons (or like items) next to each other.  They have a tendency to nest and rub together.

    Hope this helps!!

  2. what kind of dishes? are we talking about daily use plates or your nice china and stemware? Most china and stemware should be handwashed in warm soapy water and dried by hand to prevent breaking chipping. Daily use plates/glassware should be okay in the dishwasher. Line the plates up between the prongs so that they do not touch each other. Don't over load the dishwasher either. Glasses should always be on the top rack. Bottom rack can make them break/melt (if plastic). Hope this helps.
